Northland Area
Established in 1961. Prior to this, the districts in Northland (and many other parts of rural New Zealand) were autonomous districts, beigh directly administered by Dominion HQ rather than going through Provincial HQ as they did in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago. When areas were created, the line of accountability for districts was through their respective areas.
